What Car Key Replacement Really Costs

Price is driven by three things: the type of key, whether a working copy exists, and how the key is cut.

A basic mechanical key duplicate is the cheapest job on the board. A transponder key adds programming time. A laser-cut high-security key adds milling. A proximity smart key for a late-model vehicle sits at the top because the blank itself is expensive.

All-keys-lost work always costs more than duplication because the key must be originated from the vehicle's code and the immobilizer relearned.

A mobile locksmith is generally less expensive than a dealership once towing is factored in, and the vehicle never has to leave your driveway.
